The Reading Frenzy

The Reading Frenzy

After the rocky start of 2021, I’ve finally settled into a new rhythm. I have fully embraced my situation, and I’ve adopted a slightly new lifestyle to go with it. Don’t get me wrong – I’m still a couch potato at large, but I’ve become more intentional with how I dedicate my time. I set aside time to walk 10-15 minutes a day (baby steps!), I try to meditate each morning, and I’ve been using up my stash yarn to make cat blankets. Mostly though, I’ve been devouring books like my soul depends on it.

It all started when a dear friend of mine wanted a book recommendation last fall, and I suggested the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. If you’re not familiar, it’s a Young Adult (YA) fantasy series about a teenage assassin who tries to stop a tyrant king from taking over the world while also coming to terms with her fate. Long story short, she’s a badass and the story is exciting, suspenseful, and packed with action, adventure, despair, and hope. I love it.

But, I’d forgotten how much I loved it until I decided to re-read it with my friend. And just like that, I fell into an abyss of words. My hunger for reading has never been shallow, but sharing something so wonderful with another human being has re-ignited my love for books into something ravenous, as if I’d been starved from words for far too long. I feel *alive* and inspired and motivated, not just to read but to engage in the world again.

I really must thank Maas for being a stunning person who is brilliant with her craft, and my friend, without whom I would still be floating around aimlessly, picking up and then putting down books I would not read. The reading frenzy is a fine thing in life, and it is pure addiction when you have someone to share it with.

In all seriousness, if you like fantasy and strong female characters who take no shit and persevere in the darkest of times, please please please check out the Throne of Glass books. Don’t let the length of the books or the series deter you – it is worth reading every page.

Thanks for reading, folks, keep those pages turning!
